INTRODUCTION
&
ABSTRACTION

People always want to conquer the sky like birds, and that’s why the Wright brothers invented aircraft. However, air crash has been a nightmare around all the passengers since the first accidents happened.

When talking about air crash, most people will think of the catastrophic disaster, the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which has not been found out yet. This calamity also raised a hot debate about the safety of aviation.

It is commonly accepted that the accident rate of air crash is extraordinarily low, compared with other transportation, trains, cars and ships for instance. However, the mortality rate may be the highest among all those transportation patterns. Then, what’s the main cause of air crashes? Does bigger type of aircrafts have better safety performance? Is there any method to help oneself to survice from such an accident? Here in our study, dated back to 1987, until April of 2015, the data of almost 800 times of air crashes have been collected, including the fatalities on board, the location of the accident place, the operator and manufacturer of accident planes, and so on. The results are shown as below.

MAP OF ACCIDENT LOCATION

It is well known that from this map, most serious plane crashes are distributed in Africa, most of the fatalities of which are over 100. Another concentrated district is East Asia which was mainly located along the coast of the Pacific Ocean and the Himalaya Mountains. And Oceania and North America have relatively less plane crashes. Finally, most plane crashes in Latin America are distributed in Brazil.

CONCLUSION

Although there are some worrying data we figured out, transport by aircraft is still the safest way. The air accident rate is only 0.0002%, which means only 0.2 hours had accident in every ten thousand flight hours on average in the world. In other words, if a person takes flight every day, it will took about 1400 years for him/her to be caught in an air crash. None of us want to see accidents happen, for it will bring pains to thousands of families. And a rational attitudes towards all the transportation methods would be a right behavior. In the end, we hope everyone have a safe and happy journey.
