General commercial aviation security condition is getting better and better in past twenty years. Less commercial aviation accidents happened in recent years, and less people died in those accidents as well. 45 air crashes happened in both 1989 and 1994, and the number of victims were 1,746 and 1,799 respectively, while 17 accidents happened in 2013 and 239 victims died.

However, severe accidents still happened at times. Nearly one thousand people died in air crashes in 2014, indicating that 93 victims died per accident; and another one hundred and ninety-three people died in the first four months of 2015.

According to the definition from ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), different phases of flight are divided into 7 stages. And from this graph, we can easily find that air accidents were much more likely to happen in en route and approach stage, in which around 70% of all accidents occurred. However, the highest mortality rate happened during climbing, while severe accidents also took place in approaching. And since larger aviations seldom met problems during these two processes and the whole number of passengers is far more than smaller ones, the mortality rate is  much lower than we imagine.

When is air crash?

Have you even thought when the air crashes mostly happened? Daytime or nighttime? From air accidents in 1987-2015.5, accidents' time(Daytime and nighttime) has been calculated. The result showed that over 60% air crashes was in daytime, and however only 30% were happened on Nighttime, which is not as same as most people's guess.
